Buffy the Vampire Slayer Gets More Bad News as New Game Is Reportedly Canceled

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the most iconic television series of the 1990s, and one that will always be beloved among its still gargantuan fandom. Sadly, outside its divisive comic book runs, the series has failed to find space in the modern media landscape, with a reboot starring a returning Sarah Michelle Gellar having been canceled by Hulu, following the production of a pilot.

Now, Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans are getting even more bad news. As reported in a new leak on Reddit, an official Buffy video game from Deck Nine Games, known for their work on Square Enix's Life Is Strange series, was in development, only for it to be canceled.

Official New Buffy the Vampire Slayer Release Reportedly Canceled

During its original airing from 1997 to 2003, Buffy the Vampire Slayer received a number of video game adaptations. Buffy the Vampire Slayer released on the GameBoy in 2000, a game of the same name released on the original Xbox in 2002, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Wrath of the Darkhul King released on the Game Boy Advance in 2003, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds released on the GameCube, Xbox, and PS2 later that same year.

Smaller additional games would come out following these, the final one releasing in 2009 for the Nintendo DS, but the big-budget AAA title that many fans of the Scoobies always wanted never materialized. And, if a new Reddit leak is to be believed, this is a wish that even Anyanka seemingly wouldn't have been able to grant.

On September 5, a Reddit user named Mazzus_Did_That made a post to r/GamingLeaksAndRumors using the comments of another user named LadyDevHeart, allegedly a former Deck Nine Games developer, as a source to report that a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer game was in pre-production, only for it to get canceled.

LadyDevHeart's comments discussed the troubled development of Life is Strange: Double Exposure, Deck Nine's contractual obligations to Square Enix to complete Life is Strange: Reunion, the company's current financial straits, and behind the scenes issues at the company, including "harassment, racism and general incompetence," as well as sexism and overworking of employees.

On top of this, LadyDevHeart also claimed that not only was a game based on Buffy the Vampire Slayer in development, but also one based on Conan the Barbarian, as well as Wolf Among Us 2. And, also according to this source, these games were all canceled.

LadyDevHeart's Buffy-related claims are backed up by the work of another user, Emeralds_are_green. They had tracked down a former Deck Nine developer's portfolio page, and found that they had a game in production listed as "vampire game (canceled)."

It's not a great time to be a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan right now, especially following the tragic deaths of Michelle Trachtenberg and Anthony Head. But, as long as fans hold onto their love for the series, there's no telling what its future could hold.
