The people behind Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering are joining the United Wizards of the Coast union. The studios behind the most iconic fantasy TTRPG and beloved, long-running card game will unite to demand better wages and working conditions from their employers.
Dungeons & Dragons and Studio X Joining United Wizards of the Coast
In an official blog post, the United Wizards of the Coast union announced that the Dungeons & Dragons design team, which includes those who work on Dungeons & Dragons and the digital content platform D&D Beyond, and Studio X, the developers of Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters, are uniting in solidarity with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) to form a union.
According to the statement, the tabletop publisher Wizards of the Coast has until October 13 to recognize the union voluntarily. It is not the end of the world if WOTC doesn't recognize the union; it'll just mean extra steps need to be taken.
The stated desires of the D&D and Magic team align with the wants and concerns of the Magic: The Gathering Arena devs who first founded United Wizards of the Coast. The workers desire better wages, job security, clear career progression, healthcare, sustainable workloads, ownership of work created outside the office, and protection against the encroachment of AI. The latter concern is of special importance given WOTC CEO Chris Cocks' vocal support of the technology.
An official statement from the D&D design team reads as follows:
The games we create are foundations of the gaming industry. Just as D&D has inspired countless TTRPGs and Magic sparked the TCG revolution, we hope to catalyze real change within our industry and build upon the groundwork laid by other gaming unions, creating a space where all workers are protected and treated fairly.
The workers of Wizards of the Coast have shown time and time again that we change the game. This is one of those times, where we get to redefine what is possible and what can be created—and this time, we’re inviting you to join us! Sign our petition, share it with your communities, and ask Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro to voluntarily recognize our union. Let’s change the gaming world together!
Overall, a unionized D&D and Magic design team would be an absolute boon to these pillars of gaming. The unions would offer worker protections, improve quality-of-life conditions, and ultimately lead to stronger, more sustainable production, and better potential quality of work going forward.
