EA FC 27 is making a major change to Clubs before the game even reaches worldwide audiences this weekend.
Following feedback collected during the game’s Early Access period, EA has confirmed that long-term fatigue will return in an upcoming title update for EA FC 27, effectively putting an end to the unlimited stamina players have grown accustomed to over the past year.
It might sound like a simple reversal, but after an entire game cycle built around the Sprint meter, bringing stamina management back into the equation could fundamentally change how Clubs is played.
What’s the difference between Stamina and Sprint in EA FC games?
In EA FC 26, the stamina system was replaced with the Sprint meter. On the surface, the two systems work similarly: the more a player sprints, the more of the meter they use.
However, the key difference is in the long-term effects these systems have had on Clubs gameplay. Under the Sprint system, the meter begins replenishing whenever a player stops sprinting. Given enough time to recover, they can return to full capacity regardless of how much running they’ve already done during the match. There’s effectively no long-term punishment for repeatedly exhausting the meter.
The traditional Stamina system works much differently. A player’s energy gradually deteriorates over the course of a match, with constant sprinting accelerating the decline. By the later stages of a match, a player who spent most of the match running back and forth won’t have as much energy as someone who managed theirs carefully.
That distinction might seem small to the uninitiated, but to experienced Clubs players — especially those in the competitive 11v11 scene — it might very well be a gamechanger.
How the Stamina system might change the meta in EA FC 27
Perhaps the biggest beneficiary of the Sprint system has been the 3-5-2, which has become the most commonplace formation seen in competitive Clubs play. On paper, playing with three defenders should come with an obvious trade-off. The formation sacrifices traditional fullbacks in favor of two wide midfielders, leaving plenty of space down either flank when those players push forward. In practice, the Sprint system has made that weakness much easier to cover.
Wide midfielders (some call them “wingbacks” or “outside midfielders”) can join virtually every attack before sprinting the length of the pitch to defend, knowing that any energy they expend will eventually come back. Instead of having to pick their moments to get forward, they can provide width in possession and then recover to create what effectively becomes a five-man back line without worrying about what all that running will mean in the 70th or 80th minutes.
In short, three-back formations of various kinds have become the meta over the past year. Sure, they have always been viable, but the trade-offs used to balance things out. Now that the Stamina system is returning, four-back formations may be viable.
The obvious advantage is that the defensive workload is naturally spread across more players. In a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, for example, fullbacks don’t necessarily need to provide all of the team’s width moving forward before immediately recovering into the defensive line. Wingers can stay higher up the pitch, while the fullbacks can be more selective about when they join the attack, if they wish to at all.
Yes, many competitive teams will still elect to play the traditional three-back formations they’ve been using. And yes, they will remain completely viable. But, in a perfect world, any club manager with big ideas should be able to play the way they like without putting themselves at a disadvantage.
We have not yet arrived at a perfect world, but at least this puts them one step closer.
