Wizards of the Coast dropped a sneak peek of their upcoming D&D: Star Wars books. At this year's New York Comic Con panel, the publisher gave attendees a look at artwork and at the two books that make up this major crossover.
The D&D: Star Wars New York Comic Con Preview
At the New York Comic Con panel, Wizards of the Coast confirmed that D&D: Star Wars will be made of two books. The D&D: Star Wars Core Rules will contain all the rules you need to start your campaign in a galaxy far, far away. The second, D&D: Star Wars, Tyro Squadron: Adventures is an original prewritten adventure.
A Core Rulebook is self-explanatory. While the rules and setting of Dungeons & Dragons can escalate to cosmic proportions, see the space opera hijinx of Spelljammer, there are parts of Star Wars that need concrete rules to work within the system. Rules for vehicles, space travel, star fighter combat, lightsabers, how The Force works, and how exactly alignment affects the Light and Dark sides of The Force.
As for how comprehensive those rules are, the Tyro Squadron book does hint at the design team's focus. The book focuses on the players as members of a secret Rebel group set during the original trilogy. That means ship chases, blaster fights, and exploring new parts of the galaxy, all to aid the Rebellion against the Galactic Empire.
With this in mind, it's clear D&D: Star Wars will attempt to stick as close to George Lucas' original foundation as much as possible. Little to no expanded universe canon, little if any material from any of the streaming series, and not much representation from the prequel or sequel trilogy. Given how divisive or contentious these elements are to the Star Wars fanbase, taking this safe a bet was to be expected. Worst case scenario, there's still the beloved West End Games system knocking around.
The panel concludes by stating that more information on D&D: Star Wars will be revealed in April, 2027 as part of Star Wars Celebration.
