I forgot it was ever a Beta, because Steam's Personal Calendar is actually one of the most useful features they've added to the store recently.
What exactly is it? A set of games shown off over time from recently released to upcoming releases, personalized to what Valve think you'll be interested in based on what you've played recently and data from others with similar interests. It's a clever way to use the vast amount of data Valve will be capturing from what you buy and play. As Valve explained in the announcement:
- Based on games you play a lot: The system focuses on your playtime for games that you play the most. So, a few minutes trying out a new game or two won't have much impact on your recommendations, but sinking a bunch of time into a new favorite will.
- Refreshed daily: This recommendation system gets re-trained daily to incorporate the latest data. In reality you aren't likely to see your recommendations change all that much from day to day, but as time goes by you will obviously see new things pop up as the 8-week horizon of the calendar marches forward, or as games lock in their release dates.
Again, this is why I choose to spend my money on Steam. Constant tweaks to make the user experience better. While others try to fight against giving us more information.
In the blog post, Valve confirmed again that they don't take payments for any form of advertising on Steam. So it's all based on algorithms and their own personal picks in certain places (like those big Steam home release announcement banners).
